AIM-120 AMRAMM desk model. The AIM-120 A/B AMRAAM was a fire-and-forget missile with active guidance. Also known in the USAF service as the Slammer, the AIM-120 was designed with the same form-factor as the Sparrow missiles. NATO pilots use the brevity code Fox Three whenever an AIM-120 missile is launched. The AMRAAM was developed as the result of an agreement among the United States and several other NATO nations to develop air-to-air missiles and to share production technology. NATO and Europe would develop the next generation short-range missile under this agreement.
