The Sikorsky S-76 helicopter model was developed in response to the growing need for transport helicopters in offshore energy operations. This led Sikorsky to conduct global market research to determine the requirements of such operators. In 1975, Sikorsky commenced the development of the Sikorsky S-76, a 14-seat commercial helicopter, which was later named 'Spirit.' The inaugural flight of the first of four prototypes took place on March 13, 1977. The enhanced S-76B model was equipped with Pratt & Whitney PT6B-36 turboshaft engines. An alternative to the S-76B, the S-76C model, was powered by Turbomeca Arriel 1S1 turboshaft engines.
